State Farm Insurance in Florida: The Entity, the Ratings, the Honest Read
State Farm is Florida’s #1 residential insurer — 650,602 policies per the state’s own May 2026 data — and our biggest single competitor, sold through 19,000 exclusive agents who quote exactly one company family. This page tells the part the billboards don’t: your Florida home policy isn’t written by the national giant. It’s written by State Farm Florida Insurance Company, a separate, Florida-only subsidiary carrying its own AM Best rating — A− (Excellent), against the parent’s A+ — while your auto rides the Illinois parent’s paper directly. Both are legitimate, regulator-approved arrangements. Knowing which company and which rating actually stand behind each policy is simply what an informed renewal looks like — and it’s the reading an exclusive agent has no reason to walk you through.

From a retired farmer’s idea to Florida’s #1 — via one near-exit
George Mecherle’s 1922 thesis — rural drivers were overcharged and deserved a mutual of their own — built the largest personal insurer in America, still owned by its policyholders. Florida tested it like nowhere else: Hurricane Andrew cost State Farm roughly $3.5 billion here, and in 1998 the company created State Farm Florida Insurance Company, a standalone Florida-only property writer headquartered in Winter Haven, to carry the state’s home business going forward.
The chapter every “is State Farm leaving Florida” search traces back to is 2009: after a 47.1% rate filing was disapproved, State Farm Florida announced a plan to withdraw from Florida property entirely — then reached an agreement with regulators to stay, non-renewing a portion of the book and continuing on. It stayed for good. In July 2023, the week Farmers pulled its brand from the state, State Farm publicly committed to its “substantial presence” in Florida, crediting the legal reforms — and the state’s own data shows what followed: from 588,005 policies in early 2023 to 650,602 by May 2026, #1 statewide, with 2,913 new homeowners policies written in May 2026 alone. Whatever else is true of our biggest competitor, “leaving” isn’t.
Two companies, two ratings — the fact your dec page knows
Here is the entity map, stated precisely. Your Florida home, condo, or renters policy is written by State Farm Florida Insurance Company — licensed only in Florida and Illinois, wholly owned by the parent, and carrying its own AM Best rating: A− (Excellent), affirmed November 14, 2025, with a stable outlook. Your Florida auto policy is written by State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company — the parent itself — rated A+ (Superior) in the same November 2025 action, which also lowered the parent from its former top grade. AM Best’s own commentary notes the Florida company’s ratings reflect lift from its parent.
Read that without alarm and without illusion. A− is an Excellent-tier, secure rating, and the structure exists for a regulator-approved reason: keeping property coverage available in a catastrophe state without exposing the national balance sheet to it. But it also means the national advertising halo and the paper behind your Florida roof are not the same thing — the home policy stands on the Florida company’s own rating, surplus, and reinsurance. That’s the know-your-entity reading our whole carrier library teaches, and on no brand does it matter more than the biggest one.
The rate story — what’s verified, and what we won’t print yet
On auto, the record is excellent and official: Florida’s regulator approved State Farm’s third auto cut since fall 2024 in January 2026 — 10.1% on average, bringing cumulative reductions past 20% and, in the regulator’s words, over $1 billion in statewide savings — and in March 2026 announced a roughly $533 million dividend to Florida State Farm Mutual auto customers, averaging about $173 per vehicle. Credit where due: that is the reformed market working, and State Farm passing it through.
On homeowners, we print what’s verified: a 14.4% average decrease back in 2019, by State Farm’s own announcement. Reports have circulated of a roughly 10% Florida homeowners reduction filing in 2026 — we haven’t verified it against the state’s filing system, and it’s easily confused with the approved auto cut, so it stays off this page until it’s confirmed. When a competitor earns a fact, we print it; when a rumor resembles one, we don’t.
Our take — and where we win
State Farm competes with the carriers on our shelf through 19,000 exclusive agents, and it earns its scale — a mutual with a century of catastrophe response and a Florida book growing on purpose. The structural weaknesses are just as plain. An exclusive agent can only ever quote you one company family — at every renewal, forever. The Florida home paper carries A− while the brand’s halo says national giant — a distinction the sales process has no incentive to teach. And the Florida company writes no landlord, no mobile home, and no flood of its own — the pieces Florida households actually assemble. Our take: the biggest name in insurance still produces exactly one number per renewal. We produce twenty-plus.
- 20+ carriers against one family. A State Farm quote is a data point; a market is a decision.
- The rating literacy on the sheet. We’ll show you the A− and the A+ side by side with every alternative’s grade — agency, grade, date — so the halo never does the underwriting.
- The lines it doesn’t write. Landlord DP-3, mobile home, private flood past the federal caps — quoted across our markets in the same sitting.
- The renewal re-compare. Exclusive agents re-quote the house; we re-shop it. Different verbs, different outcomes.
Claims, and where the agent fits
State Farm claims file with State Farm directly — statefarm.com, the State Farm app, or 800-SF-CLAIM (800-732-5246), answered around the clock. Nothing on this page changes at claim time; the carrier’s claims operation is the machine, whoever sold the policy. The difference lives earlier: before the renewal, when the only question that matters is whether the policy you hold is still the policy the market would choose for you. That’s a twenty-minute conversation with us — 813.920.8181, any quiet day — and your State Farm agent relationship survives it either way.
State Farm in Florida: your questions, answered
Is State Farm leaving Florida?
No — and the record is unambiguous. The 2009 chapter is real: State Farm Florida announced a withdrawal plan after a disapproved rate filing, then reached an agreement with regulators to stay. Since then it has recommitted publicly — pledging its “substantial presence” in 2023 — and grown to #1 statewide: 650,602 residential policies per Florida OIR’s May 2026 data, with thousands of new policies written monthly. Our competitor is here to stay; the honest question is whether it’s priced to stay on your house.
What is State Farm Florida Insurance Company — is it different from State Farm?
It’s the separate, Florida-only subsidiary that writes State Farm’s Florida home, condo, and renters policies — created in 1998, headquartered in Winter Haven, licensed only in Florida and Illinois, and carrying its own AM Best rating of A− (Excellent), affirmed November 2025. The national companies write everything else, including your auto. Your declarations page names which company holds each policy — and the ratings differ, which is exactly why the reading matters.
What is State Farm’s rating in Florida?
By entity, as always: State Farm Florida Insurance Company — the home paper — carries AM Best A− (Excellent), affirmed November 14, 2025, with commentary noting lift from its parent. State Farm Mutual — the auto paper — carries A+ (Superior) from the same action, which also lowered the parent from its former top grade. Both are secure ratings; neither is the other. Our ratings guide covers how to read the scales.
Who writes State Farm auto insurance in Florida?
State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company — the Illinois parent, directly. Florida auto was never part of the Florida property subsidiary, which is why the 2009 property-withdrawal drama never touched the auto book. The auto paper carries the parent’s A+ (Superior), and lately its best story: three rate cuts since fall 2024 totaling over 20%, plus a ~$533 million Florida dividend, per the state regulator.
Did State Farm lower home insurance rates in Florida?
Verified: a 14.4% average homeowners decrease in 2019, by State Farm’s own announcement. Reported but unverified: a roughly 10% Florida homeowners reduction filing in 2026 — easily confused with the approved 10.1% auto cut, so we don’t print it as fact. Either way, a filed statewide average is not your renewal: your number moves on your roof, your rebuild limit, and your carrier’s appetite — which is what a market comparison prices.
Why can my State Farm agent only quote State Farm?
Because that’s the model: State Farm’s 19,000 agents are exclusive agents — skilled, often excellent, and contractually limited to one company family. It’s not a criticism; it’s an architecture. An independent agency is the other architecture: the same licensed-agent relationship, pointed at 20+ home carriers and 6+ auto carriers instead of one. You don’t have to pick a side — plenty of households keep both and let the annual comparison referee.
Does State Farm write landlord, mobile home, or flood policies in Florida?
The Florida property company’s book is homeowners, condo, and renters — no landlord dwelling-fire, no mobile home lines in the state’s data, and flood means the federal program’s limits. Those are precisely the pieces Florida households assemble from specialists: our landlord DP-3 markets, Florida’s mobile-home writers, and 10+ flood markets including private limits past $250,000. One entry here prices all of it in a sitting.
