Citizens Insurance of Florida Removing Valuable Coverage From Policies

Starting January 1st, 2012 for all new business and renewals, Citizens Insurance Company of Florida is removing coverage for all policy holders. In what many insiders see as a “first round” of coverage reduction, any structure attached or detached on the insured premises with different non-roof like material similar to that of the primary dwelling is being removed. This means screen pool enclosures or lanais, pergola’s, enclosed porches made of tin or other similar roofing will have zero coverage from any peril.

Because of the economy, both legislators and executive branch leaders have been reluctent to pass any measure that would directly raise the rates of Citizens. However, this backdoor method of stripping coverage may start the ball rolling for again making Citizens the insurance company of last resort.

The official memo sent to agents Nov. 3rd, 2011 said the following:

The following changes apply to personal residential renewal policies with effective dates on or after:

  1. Personal residential multiperil (PR-M): January 1, 2012
  2. Personal residential wind-only (PR-W): February 1, 2012

Citizens no longer will provide Coverage A or B for the following structures whether attached to the dwelling or not:

  • Screened enclosures that are aluminum framed or not covered by the same or substantially the same materials as that of the primary dwelling
  • Carports that are aluminum or not covered by the same or substantially the same materials as that of the primary dwelling
  • Patios that have a roof covering not constructed of the same or substantially the same materials as that of the primary dwelling
  • Awnings
  • Structures with a roof or wall covering that are thatch, lattice, slats or a similar material
  • Slat houses, chickees, tiki huts, gazebos, cabanas, canopies, pergolas or similar structures constructed to be open to the weather

Any of the above structures that currently are scheduled under Coverage B – Other Structures will have their increased limits and coverage amounts removed at renewal.

Eric was a lifesaver. I called him in a panic after yet again our homeowners insurance almost tripled in Tampa, so of course I start looking to find cheaper and one phone call is all it took. He went into action and took over and got me an amazing rate. He was patient and answered any questions I had and eased my mind and told me he'd help me no matter what. I will now recommend Eric to everyone I know whose insurance yet again went up.

I needed to contact this company along time ago. I can't say enough about Kyle Wilson. He responded to my texts, emails and phone calls promptly. A rarity in the business world today. He got me the best deal on my homeowners insurance and I had called around myself. I highly recommend Kyle and Cornerstone!

I had to give 4 stars because in the end they couldn’t help me, but Josh got back to me immediately with answers to my questions. Very helpful and friendly. Thanks for your knowledge and understanding.

We have been searching for a more affordable homeowners insurance policy and we got a quick response from James Bonn at cornerstone insurance. The quote we got was much lower than other insurers and after a home inspection, we were insured by Tower Hill. He walked us through the whole process and we are good to go. In 6 months we will be checking back with James for our auto insurance.

Gina McNairy gets an “A” in customer service. She patiently explained insurance details that she had already explained to my husband. She further was very patient in explaining how Docusign works, sometimes patiently explaining things twice. I know she had a heavy workload awaiting her when she finished our phone call. She continued being patient throughout the call.
